May is a welcome shift. The days are longer, the sunshine feels good, and many of us are spending more time outside with our pets. But warmer weather also means it is time to be more intentional. Heat can become dangerous for pets much faster than many people realize, so a little preparation now can go a long way in keeping them safe all season long.
One of the best things pet parents can do is build simple habits before summer arrives in full force. Make sure your pet always has access to cool, clean water. If your dog will be outside, provide reliable shade and regular breaks indoors or in air conditioning. Walk earlier in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower, and remember that pavement and asphalt can become hot enough to injure paws.
It is also important to know the warning signs of overheating. Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, distress, vomiting, collapse, or an inability to settle down can all signal a serious problem. If you suspect overheating, move your pet out of the heat immediately and begin cooling measures by getting them into shade or air conditioning, using a fan, applying cool wet towels to the chest and abdomen, and pouring cool—not ice-cold—water over the body while seeking immediate veterinary care.
And one reminder can never be said too often: never leave a pet in a parked car—not even for a few minutes, and not even with the windows cracked. Vehicles can become dangerously hot very quickly.
At HeartyPet, we encourage pet parents to think proactively. Pack water for outings. Plan shorter adventures on hotter days. Watch brachycephalic breeds (dogs with short snouts), senior pets, overweight pets, and pets with medical issues especially closely, since they can be more vulnerable to heat stress. When in doubt, choose caution. A fun day is only a good day if everyone gets home safe and comfortable.
As the season changes, let May be the month we reset our routines and prepare well. A filled water bowl, a shaded resting spot, a cooler walking time, and a little extra awareness can make all the difference. Here’s to a safe, happy, tail-wagging start to the warm-weather season.
